A Passel Of Pics

Maybe it’s fishing seasons really starting to get rolling.

Maybe it’s a string of two (praise the lord and pass the SPF 2!) sunny days in a row.

Maybe it’s an editor trying to get out of copy editing for awhile.

Or maybe it’s folks just saying, “Heck with high gas prices, I’m goin’ anyway!”

Whatever it is, over the past few days, I’ve received a number of really good fishing and hunting pictures that I thought I’d post.

TERRY WIEST TURNED AROUND ON HIS WAY OUT TO THE HALIBUT GROUNDS AND SNAPPED THIS PIC OF THE SUN RISING OVER WESTPORT EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. (TERRY WIEST/STEELHEADUNIVERSITY.COM)

TERRY WIEST WITH ONE OF THE HALIBUT HE AND CREW NABBED MAY 1 FISHING 600 FEET OF WATER WITH BLACK LABEL HERRING AND A SALMON "STRIP TEASE." (TERRY WIEST/STEELHEADUNIVERSITY.COM)

JOSH FITZHUGH AWAITS A GOBBLER TO COME IN WHILE HUNTING WASHINGTON'S SOUTHEAST CORNER. "HAD A MORE DIFFICULT TIME THAN NORMAL IN THE BLUES THIS YEAR," THE GIG HARBOR, WASH., HUNTER REPORTS. "WE BATTLED SNOW, WIND, HAIL, RAIN AND HAD A LITTLE STRETCH OF GOOD WEATHER AT THE END. TRAVIS AND I EACH MANAGED TO BAG A MATURE TOM." (RUGER PHOTO CONTEST)

FITZHUGH'S WINTRY GOBBLER. (RUGER PHOTO CONTEST)

WASN'T LONG BEFORE THE HALL BOYS GOT BACK FROM COLVILLE LAST WEEKEND THAT PA, DAVE, FIRED OFF A JPEG OF HE AND SON, HUNTER'S, SUCCESSFUL HUNT. EVEN THO THE LAD HAD PASSED HUNTER ED AND DIDN'T GET HIS OWN BIRD, DAVE SAYS HE REMARKED, "AFTER I GOT THAT TURKEY, HE SAID, 'YOU KNOW, DAD, THIS IS AWESOME, EVEN IF WE DID NOT GET ONE." (RUGER PHOTO CONTEST)

DESPITE THE RAIN, WILLAMETTE VALLEY GOBBLER GUNNER TROY RODAKOWSKI GOT HIS BIRD THIS PAST SATURDAY WHILE HUNTING WITH HIS DAD. (TROY RODAKOWSKI)

SCOTT FLETCHER AND HIS FISHING BUDDY GOT INTO 'EM AT PALMER LAKE, IN NORTH-CENTRAL WASHINGTON, IN LATE APRIL, LANDING THEIR LIMITS OF KOKES BETWEEN 1.8 AND 2.8 POUNDS. "WE WERE USING WORDEN'S RED SILVER MAGIC SPINNERS TIPPED WITH WHITE SHOEPEG CORN," REPORTS THE WENATCHEE-AREA ANGLER. "WE HAD OUR BEST LUCK USING FORD FENDERS BEING THAT THE WATER CLARITY WAS NOT GOOD. WE GOT MOST OF OUR FISH BETWEEN 15 AND 20 FEET USING DOWNRIGGERS." (WRIGHT & McGILL/EAGLE CLAW PHOTO CONTEST)

MEMBERS OF THE "EXOTICS ANONYMOUS, OMAK CHAPTER" HIT THE ALKALINE LAKE ON THE COLVILLE RESERVATION THIS PAST WEEKEND, CATCHING A NUMBER OF GORGEOUS LAHONTANS, INCLUDING THIS BEAUT ABOUT TO BE RELEASED BY KEN GRAHAM. (MIKE QUINN)

"WHAT AN UNLIKELY SCENARIO FOR SALMON FISHING," WRITES NORTHWEST SPORTSMAN KAYAK KOLUMNIST MARK VEARY. "TROLLING THROUGH THE HEART OF A METROPOLIS, BENEATH TOWERING SKYSCRAPERS TO THE DEAFENING ROAR OF CITY TRAFFIC." ALL THAT NOISE PROBABLY DROWNED OUT THE HILLSBORO ANGLERS SHOUTS OF JOY AS THE HEN UP BY THE SEAT BIT. (MARK VEARY)

BEST EXCUSE FOR LATE COPY FOR THE JUNE ISSUE? "ANDY, ANY CHANCE OF GETTING ANOTHER DAY ON THE DEADLINE? THREE HARD DAYS AT THE WIND HAVE PUT ME BEHIND A TAD. GOOD DAYS THOUGH -- BOATED 13 BEAUTIFUL SPRINGERS! ROB." (ROB PHILLIPS)

I'VE BLAZED PAST THE TURNOFF TO OLALLA LAKE WITHOUT A SECOND GLANCE MORE TIMES THAN I'D LIKE TO ADMIT, BUT MAYBE NEXT TIME, I'LL DO AS RYDER SHARPE AND HIS "PAPA" DID AND STOP IN AND FISH AT THE RESERVOIR OFF US 20 NEAR TOLEDO, ORE. IT WAS RYDER'S FIRST FISH, REPORTS HIS DAD, DUSTIN, OF SALEM. (WRIGHT & McGILL/EAGLE CLAW PHOTO CONTEST)

I'VE SEEN MORE THAN A FEW SPRINGER PICS THIS SEASON WITH FISH FLASHES FLASHED SOMEWHERE IN THE IMAGE, BUT THIS IS THE MOST UNLIKELY ONE SO FAR. REPORTS KENNEWICK ANGLER JEFF HOLMES AFTER HIS TRIP LAST WEEKEND, "DRANO WAS A ZOO, BUT IT WAS FUN, AND WE GOT A COUPLE OF KEEPERS. I ALSO CAUGHT A HUGE TRAFFIC CONE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOILET BOWL WITH 40 BOATS WATCHING. OF COURSE, IN HER DELIRIUM FROM FOUR DAYS OF SPRINGER FISHING, MY WIFE LEFT THE CONE ON THE END OF THE DOCK AFTER I PHOTOED IT AND RAN BACK TO GET THE TRUCK. OTHERWISE, I WOULD HAVE BRINED AND SMOKED IT. LUCKILY, WE'VE HAD SPRINGER TO EAST FOR THREE OF THE LAST FIVE MEALS WE'VE EATEN." (JEFF HOLMES)
