Wolf Expert In PDX, Oly This Week

The guy who brought the first wolves back to Yellowstone in 1995 will be in Portland tonight and Olympia on Thursday.

But if you go looking to take a swing at him, beware, he’s pretty big — 6-foot-6.

Carter Niemeyer was also among the Federales who first began to deal with wolves naturally recolonizing Northwest Montana the decade before.

He’s been at the center of the storm ever since, famously killing off Idaho’s Whitehawks Pack because of a number of livestock kills.

He’s written a book, Wolfer, about his experiences at USDA Wildlife Services (previously known as Animal Damage Control), where he worked until 2000, and heading up the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s wolf recovery effort in Idaho.

He will be giving a slideshow at the Portland Audubon Society, 5151 NW Cornell Road, above Northwest starting at 7 p.m.

Then he’ll be at Fireside Bookstore, 116 Legion Way Southeast in Oly, starting at 7 p.m. Thursday for a discussion on wolves and book signing.
