Salmon That Will Put ’40 Years On Your Life’

If it’s December, Tony Floor is heading north to the San Juan Islands, home to some of Puget Sound’s best winter Chinook fishing, and a big-money derby — but don’t worry, it doesn’t target wild fish.

“All I want for Christmas is a big blackmouth, oh, about 20 pounds that will be worth a cool $10,000 during this two-day tournament, Dec. 3rd and 4th,” writes the fishing affairs director for the Northwest Marine Trade Association in his December newsletter, out this morning.

Floor’s referring to the new Resurrection Derby out of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, hosted by the local chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers and part of NMTA’s Salmon Derby Series.

It’s perfectly timed for the start of good fishing in the islands, according to Floor.

“Traditionally, the winter Chinook arrive in the Islands by the bus loads beginning in November. Prime time is considered December into March,” he says.

And according to Doctor Blackmouth, the taste of the salmon’s flesh is not only “delicate, extremely mild, and melts in your mouth, just like filet mignon,” but “loaded with Omega-3’s, these winter Chinook salmon will put about 40 years on your life.”

If that’s true, we’re guessing Floor will be firing off his great monthly fishing newsletters until somewhere around the year 2710.
